Swedish language in healthcare

Good knowledge of the Swedish language is a requirement in order to obtain a Swedish licence to practise and to be able to work in healthcare. There are several ways to meet the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s language requirements and practise the Swedish language.

Language requirements

In order to obtain a Swedish licence to practise, those who have trained abroad will need to demonstrate good Swedish language skills. This also applies to Swedish citizens or citizens of another Nordic country.

To demonstrate your language skills, you must have a pass grade or a certificate for one of the following:

  • Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3 from Komvux (upper secondary adult education).
  • Swedish at level C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • A course or test that provides authorisation for higher education studies.

Equivalent proficiency in Danish or Norwegian is also accepted.

You can also demonstrate your language skills by having a healthcare provider assess whether you have the language skills needed to work in the profession.

There are no formal language requirements for healthcare professions that do not require a licence to practise, except for the protected title of assistant nurse. However, it is important that you have good knowledge of Swedish.

Language initiatives via International Office

International Office can help you to practise your Swedish via various language initiatives.

Language internships: Practising your Swedish in a healthcare setting

If you were educated outside Sweden, you can practise your Swedish in a healthcare setting. During this language internship, you will have the opportunity to improve your Swedish, while also seeing how different healthcare professions work and how Swedish healthcare is structured. You will not carry out any work duties during this language internship, which lasts for one to three months.

Contact International Office if you have any questions about language internships.

Language café

Several times a year, a language café is held where you can improve your Swedish language skills. The language café is organised for healthcare professionals who currently work or want to work in Region Skåne.

Contact International Office to find out when the next language café will take place.
