The Swedish language in the health care profession

Good knowledge of Swedish is an important condition for obtaining a Swedish medical license and for being able to work in Swedish medical care. The International Office can help you if you need training in Swedish.

Language requirements

When applying for a Swedish medical license, in order to proof you language proficiency level you must pass one of the three following proficiency examinations/schools:

  • Swedish 3, or Swedish as a second language 3 at Komvux (Secondary level school for adults)
  • Swedish at a C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Course or exam that would allow you admission to a tertiary education institution where Swedish is the language of study

Equivalent skills in Danish and Norwegian are also acceptable.

If you have Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish or Icelandic citizenship and have been educated outside Sweden, you must prove your language skills.

There are no formal language requirements for those professions within health and medical care that do not require medical license.  It is important, however, that you have a good knowledge of the Swedish language.

Language apprenticeship - practise your Swedish in a medical-care environment

If you have been educated outside Sweden, you can practise your Swedish in a health and medical-care environment, and get an understanding of how Swedish medical care works at the same time.

This is called language apprenticeship, and gives you a chance to develop your Swedish while watching and observing how the different care professions work, and how Swedish medical care is organised. You do not carry out any work duties during your language apprenticeship.

If you have any queries about language apprenticeship you can contact the International Office.

Language apprenticeship can be combined with other language education in Swedish.

Language café

A language café is arranged several times a year, where you can practise your Swedish language skills. The language café can be used by those who have a profession within health and medical care, and who work or want to work in Region Skåne.

Contact the International Office for information on when the next language café will be held.

In the Skåne University Hospital library you can get help with lists of literature in medical Swedish.
